The History of Comunidad Latinx

Comunidad Latinx (CLX) is one of the youngest student organizations at Northwestern University. The founding of CLX occurred as an acknowledgement and response to the marginalization and underrepresentation of Latinx graduate students at Northwestern who were born in the United States and/or who immigrated and grew up in the United States. At the time of the organization’s inception, there were already an estimated 200+ of these Latinx graduate students at Northwestern. Despite hundreds of Latinx students enrolled at Northwestern, Latinx students have historically been amongst the most disenfranchised and ostracized group of students at Northwestern. To that end, CLX was founded to cater to the experiences and needs of Latinx students while maintaining a close relationship with our Latin American graduate student peers/family who come to Northwestern as international students. Part of our mission is to work closely with TGS and other established core student groups, such as BGSA and G-Salsa, to bring forth programming that will address the needs of all our Latinx students at Northwestern. Together, CLX encourages campus wide efforts to improve the recruitment, retention, and persistence of Latinx students, faculty, and staff. Most importantly, as an underrepresented group we find it imperative that we come together to create a comunidad that reflects the student voices of Latinx graduate students at Northwestern University. We have strived to improve campus wide visibility and overall representation. CLX’s goal has been to create a safe space and community for Latinx students and their allies in order to promote networking opportunities, support systems, and awareness for Latinx students' heritages, future legacies, and current experiences at TGS. Comunidad Latinx founding members include Julissa Muñiz, Aireale Joy Rodgers, and Claudia Castillo. Other members who have served on the executive board include Daniel Milner, Pedro Enrique Gomez, and Melissa Barona.
